The student loan application portal will open on May 24, 2024, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) said on Thursday.

The Nigerian government has finally announced that the application portal for the much touted student loan will open on Friday, 24 May.

This is contained in a statement issued by the management of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), the body saddled with the responsibility to manage and disburse the loans to interested students.

This is coming eight months after the programme failed to kick off in September 2023 earlier announced by President Bola Tinubu

The president had earlier given the September 2023 date before it was later moved to January. However, the President later recalled the earlier law passed and presented a modified copy which addressed some of the grey areas identified by concerned Nigerians. Premium Times Narrated.

How to access the portal?

The agency said the portal can be accessed via NELFUND PORTAL also urging them to seek more information and assistance through the agency’s verified social media handles to avoid being duped by fraudulent persons.

President Ahmed Bola Tinubu Decision

Tinubu based his decision on the need for the scheme to accommodate those who may not want to pursue a university education, noting that skill acquisition is as essential as obtaining undergraduate and graduate academic qualifications.

“This is not an exclusive programme. It is catering to all of our young people. Young Nigerians are gifted in different areas.

“This is not only for those who want to be doctors, lawyers, and accountants. It is also for those who aspire to use their skilled and trained hands to build our nation.

NELFUND Authority

Following the signing the students loan bill into law, President Tinubu, on April 5, appointed the management team of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund.

Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr was made the Managing Director/CEO while Mr. Frederick Oluwafemi Akinfala and Mr. Mustapha Iyal were made the Executive Director, Finance & Administration and Executive Director, Operations respectively.

The President followed that up with the appointment of Mr. Jim Ovia as the Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) on April 26.

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) is the creation of the Access to Higher Education Act, 2023. NELFUND is the body created by the Act to handle all loan requests, grants, disbursement, and recovery of the loans provided.
